Christians in the African nation of Sudan suffer severe persecution as they have been targeted as the enemy in a civil war. The government-backed Janjaweed militia wages violent war on any force that opposes a totalitarian Islamic regime. Over one million people are dead and four million have been displaced from their homes. Prisoners of war are taken and forced into physical slavery. If the men are not murdered during raids, they are forced to carry their own village’s valuables in northern Sudan as their captor’s loot. Once they reach their destination, many of the men are killed without compromise. Young boys are spared as they are not strong enough to stage a rebellion. The women are raped and dismembered. Many children are subsequently born into slavery.

Bridge of Hope has helped secure the freedom of over 31,000 slaves and is credited with influencing the Sudan Peace Act. However the mission does not stop there. Most redeemed slaves’ home villages have been destroyed by the Janjaweed, which leaves the Sudanese people without shelter. Bridge of Hope has thus delivered tens of thousands of tents and survival kits to slaves who would have been set free with nowhere to go. The kits include a month’s supply of food for a family of five, a cooking pot and storage bags, and a water container for fresh water. A sickle, fishing hooks and seeds for harvesting food are provided as well as a plastic tarp, blanket, and mosquito net for shelter. In addition to the total 2.7 million pounds of food delivered over the years, BOH has provided $3 million in medical supplies to the country’s persecuted Christians.
