Myanmar

Cyclone Nargis claimed the lives of approximately 140,000 people when it slammed into mainland Myanmar (Burma). Health facilities throughout the country sustained 75% damage and 4,000 schools were destroyed or severely damaged. Of the 800,000 homes that were affected by the storm, 450,000 were completely decimated. Food stocks were cut in half as were the tools necessary to grow crops. An estimated 2.4 million people were touched by Nargis’ severity.

In spite of the government’s efforts to thwart foreign relief groups from delivering aid, Bridge of Hope was able to administer aid to the people of Myanmar. About 90% of the population practices Theravada Buddhism. Only 4% of the country identify themselves as Christian. However, with the delivery of 100,000 pounds of food, water and medical supplies, BOH showed the love of Christ to the people of a nation that does not know Him.
