More than 75% of Guatemala lives below the poverty line. Almost half of its babies are born to mothers so malnourished that they have little or no breast milk to feed their babies. Food supply in the country is severely inadequate. Many families line up at the local garbage dumps hoping to scrounge enough to eat for the day, all the while trying to keep what they find from stray, emaciated dogs, also looking for food. Access to medical care is also extremely limited. The majority of deaths are caused by treatable diseases such as diarrhea, pneumonia, cholera and tuberculosis. Guatemala has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the world.

A little girl named Elvira was three months old and weighed less than three pounds. Her family’s home was destroyed by a mudslide. When Bridge of Hope missionaries arrived on site, they were living in a make-shift house with walls made of sticks and plastic bags and a bed from a pile of dirty clothes. Fortunately, Bridge of Hope partners and friends refused to allow these living conditions to continue. With fervent dedication to taking care of the poor that Jesus said would always be among us, BOH became a pathway of relief, sending 275,000 meals and $250,000 in medical supplies to Elvira’s area, where many like her will now get a second chance at life.
