Wait for the Promise

The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, concerning all that Jesus began both to do and teach, until the day when He was taken up, after He had given commandments through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom He had chosen, to whom He presented Himself alive after His passion by many infallible proofs, appearing to them for forty days, and speaking concerning the kingdom of God.
– Acts 1:1-3

The earthly ministry of Jesus was not over after His resurrection from the tomb. He now had to establish the direction of the church before ascending to heaven, and He did not leave until ten days before the Holy Spirit was to come indwell His faithful followers. He promised to never leave them nor forsake them; therefore, He did not ascend to heaven until it was nearly time for the Holy Spirit to indwell them.

There was a ten-day period after Jesus ascended that they would have to wait for the Holy Spirit, but they did not know at the time how long it would be. During those ten days, they had to remember and trust the words of Jesus and wait for the baptism, the immersion in His Spirit.

Lord God, overwhelm me with Your presence today by baptizing me, immersing me in Your precious Holy Spirit.

Spirit of God, show me where to sow my seed into the good soil of ministry. Help me not only to sow but also to pray, work in ministry, and share your love with others so that Your name will be exalted. Amen.
