Day 3 – Have you been baptized with fire?

Dear Friend,

In the fifth chapter of his letter to the Galatians, the Apostle Paul writes, “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Gal. 5:22).

Your Bible says the fruit of the Spirit – and this is key – “is.” It doesn’t say “are.” Meaning all of them together are one fruit.

He’s not talking about the fruit of our best attempts to please God or to serve others. That’s not what this is. This is the fruit of the Spirit of the Lord!

God intends the new life of every believer to be empowered, regenerated, reinforced, guided, counseled, comforted, and encouraged by the Holy Spirit burning within you.

Proven by generations of human failures, it was self-evident the standards of the law were impossible to reach by our own strength. Yet the Gospels tell when the Lord Jesus Christ arrived on the scene, He raised the standard of holiness and righteousness in every area of life.

God saw the problem and determined a solution: We needed a Helper – His own Spirit – which would give us a new nature!

Think of the requirements of holiness revealed by the law as a long checklist. James 2:10 tells us, “For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.” The Apostle Paul stated it this way: “For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

But thanks be to God that Christ, our Redeemer, was able to accomplish what we could not … to fulfill the law in totality, and through His death and Resurrection, pave a way for us to be baptized into His life, allowing the truth of God to be recorded on our hearts, sealed by the indwelling of His very own self-same Spirit!

These words of John the Baptist are recorded in Matthew 3, concerning Jesus:

“I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.”

Many in the modern church can recall a time where they were filled with the Holy Spirit. But few can say with honest hearts they recall being baptized with fire.

Let me challenge you …

• When is the last time you remember being moved – immersed – in the Holy Spirit?
• Can you recall feeling your heart so passionate and alive about the things of God, that your resolve is to pursue Him like a flame chases its fuel?

That’s what God wants for you – a heart so ignited with His fire … where your life is so intertwined with Christ that it becomes difficult to tell where He ends and you begin. And for you to possess His authority, dominion, and power – by His Spirit.

That Spirit is the same Spirit that flew over the chaos waters before the foundation of the world and created planets, stars, solar systems, and galaxies … the same Spirit that was with Moses, upon Elijah, and that raised to life again the three-day-dead body of the Prince of God, the Lord Jesus Christ.

It’s that Spirit, who moves like wind and fire, that seeks to be the flame that burns inside of YOU!
